About the Fellowship

GovAI’s Summer and Winter Fellowships are designed for both early-career individuals and seasoned professionals new to AI governance. Over three months, you’ll work on an independent research project, engage in Q&A sessions with experts, and attend research seminars. With guidance from our team, you’ll develop a research proposal and produce valuable outputs such as reports, journal articles, or blog posts.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

GovAI encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply. The multidisciplinary nature of AI governance means we value a broad set of skills and experiences. Here are the key qualifications and selection criteria:

  • Interest in AI Governance: A strong desire to study or influence the long-term implications of advanced AI.
  • Relevant Expertise: Skills or knowledge in political science, public policy, history, economics, sociology, law, philosophy, computer science, or related fields. A technical background is particularly valuable.
  • Quality of Work: The ability to produce clearly written, insightful, and balanced research. Strong reasoning skills and clear, concise writing are highly valued.
  • Judgment: Good intuitions about the feasibility and importance of different research directions, and the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Team Fit: Openness to feedback, intellectual honesty, and a serious interest in contributing to AI governance. We look for candidates who are comfortable expressing uncertainty and committed to rigorous analysis.

Salary, Duration, and Location

Summer and Winter Fellowships last for three months, with Fellows receiving a stipend of £9,000 and support for traveling to Oxford. This is a full-time, in-person role based in Oxford, UK. GovAI is able to sponsor visas, and successful applicants requiring a visa will need to remain in their country of application during the visa process.

The selection process includes a written submission, a remote work test, and an interview. They will reach out to candidates for paid work tests in August, offer interviews in September, and communicate final decisions in October.
